Why Shravan is the month of Mahadev
According to the Puranas, it was during Shravan that the ocean was churned (Samudra Manthan) and Lord Shiva drank the Halahala poison to save creation, holding it in his throat. Devotees offer water and milk to the Shivling through this month to soothe and honour him. Shravan is also when the monsoon renews the earth — a month of cooling, gratitude and devotion across North India, and nowhere more intensely than in Kashi, Shiva’s own city.
Why Somvar (Monday) matters
Somvar is Lord Shiva’s own day — Som is both a name of the Moon, which Shiva wears on his crown, and of Shiva himself. When a Monday falls inside Shravan, the two multiply: Shravan Somvar is traditionally held to be the single most auspicious day for Shiva worship in the whole year. Devotees keep the Somvar vrat (fast), visit Shiva temples, and sponsor a Rudrabhishek in their name on these days.
Shravan 2026 dates (North India)
In the North Indian (Purnimanta) calendar, Shravan 2026 begins on Thursday 30 July and ends on Raksha Bandhan, Friday 28 August. There are four Shravan Somvars: 3 August, 10 August, 17 August and 24 August. (In the Amanta calendar followed in South and West India, Shravan begins about two weeks later, on 13 August 2026 — if your family follows that tradition, tell us and we will match the dates.)
What is Rudrabhishek?
Rudrabhishek is the sacred bathing of the Shivling with panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar — and holy Ganga jal, while pandits chant Shri Rudram (Namakam–Chamakam) from the Yajurveda. It is performed for health and recovery from illness, protection from negativity, and the removal of deep-rooted obstacles. Performed at Kashi on a Shravan Somvar, with the Ganga itself beside the sankalp, it is considered among the most powerful pujas in the Hindu tradition.
How it works if you live abroad
You do not need to be in India. Our Kashi-trained pandits take the sankalp with your name, gotra and intention — spoken aloud on the banks of the Ganga — and perform the complete vidhi on your behalf. You receive the full video of your puja on WhatsApp the same day, you can join live on a video call if you wish, and the prasad can be shipped to your home in India or abroad. The puja, place, date and number of pandits are all agreed with you on WhatsApp before anything is booked.

All four Somvars (3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026) are equally sacred. Devotees often choose the first Somvar to begin the month with Shiva’s blessing, or a date that matches a personal intention.
